Matilda Donohoe Aull

Aunt Matilda

Matilda Donohoe was the daughter of Stephen Donohoe, one of he 13 founders of Glasgow, MO. She was born near Glasgow in 1811. Stephen is one of Mary (Henderson) Miller's ancestors. Mary's family always called Matilda Donohoe Aull, "Aunt Matilda".

Matilda married Robert Aull about 1837 in Lexington, MO. Robert and his brothers were traders along the Santa Fe Trail. They often brought back goods from Mexico. It is thought that the comb and jewelry worn in the portrait came from one of these trips.

Matilda's portrait was painted in Lexington by noted painter, George Caleb Bingham. Sadly, Matilda died in 1838 and is buried in the Aull plot in Lexington.
